Our Beginnings
The Rock N Roll K9s Performance Team was started in 1995 by Pam Koons and the Koons Family. Pam and her family had been training and playing with their dogs in organized sports and performances for years. Having worked with other canine teams competing in flyball and entertaining at public events, they developed a growing interest in developing their own style and group. So in 1995, Pam Koons and her family organized a group of fellow dog lovers and trainers into the K9 entertainment group they named the Rock N Roll K9s Performance Team.
Pam Koons, “We approached the organizers of the Novi Fifties Festival with this idea of a dog performance. They were excited about the idea and signed us up. They of course asked for our team name. We didn’t have one, but going with the festival theme….well we named our team the Rock N Roll K9s.”
Pam recounts that the team was pleasantly surprised to be signed for this popular event. Though they had previously performed at some smaller venues, they wanted to really make an impression at the Farmington Fifties Festival. So they set to work designing, creating and decorating the unique themed jumps and tunnel dressings that the Rock N Roll K9s are known for even to this day. From milkshake, guitar, and music note jumps to the classic car tunnel fronts, the Rock N Roll theme prevailed from the start.
Since their debut performance at the Farmington Fifties Festival, the Rock N Roll K9s Performance Team has appeared in thousands of events to the pleasure of audiences across MI and into Illinois. They have performed at Pet expos, local community and state wide festivals, classic car shows, grand openings, school assemblies, and fund raisers for animal rescues. They have enjoyed the spotlight during half time shows for the Detroit Pistons & Shocks and participated in countless parades including the Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade. As one of their premier events, the team can be seen annually entertaining main stage at the Frankenmuth Dog Bowl, largest K9 event of its kind nationwide.
Throughout the years the team has stayed true to its roots as a family endeavor. Three generations of Koons family members join the thirty plus handler/trainers and the fifty plus K9 stars that make up the amazing Rock N Roll K9s Performance Team.
